Energy Market Traineeship

Programme

The Energy Market Traineeship lasts two years. In that time you carry out three assignments. When you have completed them, the energy market will hold no secrets from you.

Operational Experience

The Energy Market Specialist Traineeship begins with the Operational Experience, an introductory period of two weeks. In that time you get to know all the aspects of Nuon. You see what goes on at night in a power plant, you hit the road with the sales force, you get a guided tour of the trading floor and you work alongside a call centre operative. In this way you learn about Nuon, each other, your colleagues, the culture, and potential assignments and principals. Knowledge that will certainly come in handy as an energy specialist.

Assignments

In the next two years you carry out three different assignments for three different departments. You find these assignments yourself, possibly with the help of your coach. In that way you are able to choose a project that interests you. The assignments last around three to five months each and take place in the following departments:

Energy Trade & Wholesale (ET&W)
We have our own trading floor, where energy is traded 24 hours a day throughout the world. Over twenty different nationalities operate here, where the common language is English. They obtain the information required to decide each day how much energy Nuon should produce and trade to meet demand. Your assignment at Energy Trade and Wholesale could involve assisting a trader or acting as an analyst.

Business Development & Projects (BD&P)
Nuon is a market leader in developing more efficient and sustainable means of production. Business Development & Projects is involved in projects concerning power stations, gas storage facilities, biomassĀ and solar energy. This is the place to be working on innovative solutions for a cleaner world.

Risk Management
Managing the risks involved in our trading, sourcing and business development activities requires an in-depth understanding of the underlying forces of the market and the risks inherent in the energy market. Risk Management advises our commercial departments on major contracts and on products and project development. Your assignment for Risk Management could involve analysing risk reports of trading, sourcing and corporate development activities.

Education

Alongside your work, you spend a considerable amount of time on training courses. There are specialist courses (e.g. trading, risk management, gas chain) and courses oriented to skills and competencies (e.g. communicating, influence styles). Some of them are held abroad, in London and Rome for example.

Coaching

As a trainee you are of course not on your own. During each assignment a supervisor will monitor your daily work. In addition, a mentor and a young talent manager will be closely involved in your development throughout the traineeship. The individual mentor is your sparring partner and/or counsellor. The young talent manager helps you to set your longer-term course. He/she also coordinates the entire process and helps you to select a suitable further assignment.

Finally, you are part of a trainee pool. You get together often with your fellow-trainees, you discuss issues of mutual interest and you take part in lots of fun activities.

Completion

After a year you will be ready to get to work as a fully-fledged analyst, assistent trader, developer or project leader. Together with you, we will then go in search of a job that really suits you.

Following the traineeship we remain involved in your development in the form of coaching, training and intervision. This is because Nuon considers it essential that you continue learning and growing after your traineeship.
