Programme
The Finance Traineeship takes 12 months. A period in which you get to know our company, gain experience and develop your competencies. What does our finance programme consist of?
Operational Experience
In the first two weeks you complete a comprehensive introduction programme, the Operational Experience, in which you get to know all aspects of Nuon. You see what goes on at night in a power plant, you hit the road with the sales force, you get a guided tour of the trading floor and you work alongside a call centre operative. In this way you learn about Nuon, each other, your colleagues, the culture, and potential assignments and principals. Knowledge that will certainly come in handy during and after the traineeship. After all, every business unit has its own financial challenges and reporting needs.
Assignments
After the Operational Experience you carry out two assignments, each of which takes around six months. You might lead a project or occupy a regular job. During these assignments you have your own tasks and responsibilities. You work as a fully-fledged member of a team of professionals.
You carry out each of the two assignments in one of the financial departments. You can choose which of the available assignments you consider best suited to you or your development. That’s a challenge, but it also gives you the freedom to opt for something that suits you. You enter into a performance contract for each assignment, in which the results to be achieved are agreed. In principle, finance comprises the following sections:
Accounting & Facility Services
The Accounting Services department oversees the entire financial spectrum of the Nuon organisation. The principal task of Accounting Services is to standardise financial processes, such as financial (project) accounting, annual/quarterly/monthly closings, and financial accounting support for business planning and consolidations.
Planning & Control
Planning & Control draws up internal and external reports. It also assists the various business units within Nuon in the budgeting and business plan process. Planning & Control gives the management an insight into periodic financial reports and non- financial information, based on which financial control and management can be exercised. The department is also responsible for carry out internal auditing measures, including the Business Control Framework, power of representation and authorisations.
Reporting
Reporting is responsible for the external (financial) reporting (annual financial statements, quarterly accounts) and manages the framework of reporting guidelines and procedures. Reporting is also responsible to the Board of Directors and Supervisory Board for the internal (financial) reporting (periodic management reports, business plan and budget). Furthermore, Reporting is involved in various strategic and financial projects, some of them company-wide. Finally, the department is responsible for consolidating the group figures, technical and functional application management of the consolidation system, and implementation and maintenance of the managerial, legal and fiscal structure of Nuon.
Education
During the traineeship you go through an intensive educational programme. You follow most of the training courses with company with other trainees. The training courses are specialised (e.g. about the financial systems in use at Nuon) or oriented to developing your skills (including project management) and competencies (including communication and teamwork). The majority of the training courses are given by well-known consultants and agencies.
Coaching
Although we expect you to show a lot of responsibility, as a trainee you are of course not on your own. During each assignment a supervisor will monitor your daily work and your personal development. In addition, throughout the traineeship you will have an individual mentor and a young talent manager. The individual mentor is your sparring partner and/or counsellor. The young talent manager helps you to set your longer-term course. He/she also coordinates the entire process and helps you to select a suitable further assignment.
Finally, you are part of a trainee pool. You get together often with your fellow-trainees, you discuss issues of mutual interest and you take part in lots of fun activities.
Completion
After a year you will be ready to get to work as a fully-fledged finance professional, controller, project leader or team leader. Together with you, we will then go in search of a job that really suits you.
Following the traineeship we remain involved in your development in the form of coaching, training and intervision. This is because Nuon considers it essential that you continue learning and growing after your traineeship.
