Nuon Solar Team

Nuon has been the principal sponsor of the Nuon Solar Team since 2001. We have now supported the construction of the Nuna solar-powered car and participation in the World Solar Challenge five times.

By supporting the Nuon Solar Team Nuon intends to show as many people as possible what everyone can achieve by using renewable energy intelligently. With the Nuna4 the first step was taken towards realising a car that runs on solar energy and that is suitable for everyday use. For example, it had normal vehicle lighting and the driver could sit upright, a development that was carried forward to Nuna5. In addition, Nuon wants to encourage young talent to contribute to technical innovations and a sustainable future.

Nuon Solar Team

The fifth Nuon Solar Team comprised 14 students from the Delft University of Technology. They interrupted their studies to bring about the solar-powered car. The students worked on the design and construction of Nuna5 under the leadership of team captain Rein van den Eijnde. They did everything they could to make the new Nuna even faster, more economical and more attractive than its predecessors. The Nuon Solar Team won the previous editions of the World Solar Challenge. Each successive version of Nuna has been faster and more compact than the one before.

This edition the team went for gold again. Unfortunately, three weeks before the race the Nuna5 crashed during a test drive. The team made every effort to get the car ready for the race on time and they worked on it 24 hours a day. And their hard work was rewarded: the team rode a spectacular race and finished second. A great performance! You can see pictures of the Nuon Solar Team

World Solar Challenge

The World Solar Challenge is a biennial race across Australia for cars powered by solar energy. More than 30 teams from all over the world take part. The race covers a distance of over 3,000 kilometres, from Darwin in the north to Adelaide in the south. Since 2009 the World Solar Challenge has been part of the Global Green Challenge; as well as the race for solar-powered cars there is a race for electric/hybrid cars over the same route.
