Hemweg 9 power plant

Nuon is developing a new gas-fired power plant in Amsterdam: Hemweg 9. By investing in new production capacity Nuon can continue to supply electricity to its customers in an environmentally friendly manner.

Location

The new unit is built on the existing Nuon site in the western port area of Amsterdam. This location already has the right infrastructure; it has all the required connections and there is sufficient cooling water capacity. In addition, the site is already officially designated for 'energy production' and there is room to construct new buildings.

Two power plants current stand on this site: Hemweg 7, a natural gas-fired plant dating from 1979, and Hemweg 8, a coal-fired plant. After the new Hemweg 9 power plant is up and running the old Hemweg 7 plant will be closed, but its combined cycle gas turbine will remain in use.

Technology

The new gas-fired power plant will be a CCGT plant (Combined Cycle Gas Turbine). This technology offers high output (circa 57%) so it is very environmentally friendly. The new power plant will have a maximum capacity of 435 megawatts. This is enough to provide power to 750,000 households.

Additionally, the new power plant will be capable of supplying heating. Because of the limited current heating needs in the vicinity of the Hemweg location, no heating will be supplied initially.

Timetable

Nuon has taken the investment decision in April 2010.
Nuon has launched a tender procedure and selected Siemens to be the contractor to construct the power plant.

The construction work will take two to three years. The power plant is scheduled to begin production late 2012.
