Schuytgraaf auxiliary heat plant

In 2009 Nuon constructed an auxiliary heat plant in the new rural housing development Schuytgraaf in Arnhem. The development of the plant was based on three pillars: aesthetics, output and sustainability. This involved the use of unusual architecture and innovative biodiesel technology to achieve a substantial reduction in CO2 emissions.

Why an auxiliary heat plant?

Normally the district heating for Schuytgraaf comes from the Kleefse Waard combined heat & power plant in Arnhem. However, there are peaks in demand, such as on cold winter days, in the mornings or in the early evening. Only then, or in the event of a malfunction, does the auxiliary heat plant come into action. Schuytgraaf auxiliary heat plant has enough capacity for the entire neighbourhood. In this way the 6,250 households in Schuytgraaf are assured of a constant supply of heat.

Attractive and environmentally friendly

Schuytgraaf is a green and natural neighbourhood. Our auxiliary heat plant was designed to fit into it architectonically. The sustainable design with its stone facade and a roof that is partially covered with greenery is a perfect match for the built-up and yet natural surroundings. Moreover, thanks to the unusual design there are no chimneys to be seen. Not is there any nuisance from smell, smoke or noise. It goes without saying that all the materials used are sustainable. The fact that the two boilers are fired by biodiesel is totally in keeping with our concern for the environment.

District heating: comfort with a future

Nuon district heating is comfortable: it comes into the home ready-made. The residents of Schuytgraaf don’t need a central heating boiler.

Not only that, but residents who use district heating contribute towards a cleaner environment. This is because district heating is a residual product, so it’s renewable. The heat that is left over from the production of electricity, for example. Using district heating enables the average family to cut its CO2 emissions by half!
