Gas storage

Gas storage Epe

Gas storage

In the German town of Epe, just across the border at Enschede, Nuon now stores gas in disused salt mines.

As the gas fields are beginning to run low, the Netherlands is increasingly dependent on other countries. Gas storage allows Nuon to respond flexibly to fluctuations in gas supply and demand. This gives customers greater security of supply.

Development of new gas storage capacity

Nuon is expanding its gas storage capacity at Zuidwending, in the province of Groningen. Nuon and Gasunie are each building underground storage facilities in salt caverns there. A total of up to ten caverns are being created in collaboration with AkzoNobel, the owner of the salt extraction concession for that area.

Nuon's natural gas buffer comprises a maximum of four caverns and a gas installation, which has yet to be built. Nuon intends storing high calorific gas here. The investment decision has not yet been taken.

Gasunie’s natural gas storage will comprise a maximum of six caverns. These will be used for storing Groningen gas.
