Power, Heat & Services

The Power, Heat & Services (PH&S) business unit is responsible for the production of electricity, heating and cooling. In addition, this business unit is responsible for the management of the industrial parks and for gas storage. With a market share of 17%, Nuon is one of the biggest electricity producers in the Netherlands. The company has various power plants where electricity is generated. Some of that power is generated sustainably through the use of wind, solar and hydro energy.

Nuon also supplies district heating and cooling. District heating is residual heat released during the industrial processes of, for example, power plants and waste incineration units. Nuon captures this residual heat and uses it to heat residential districts and businesses. The use of district heating ensures that CO2 emissions are reduced considerably.

Nuon is the first energy company in the Netherlands to supply cooling as well as district heating. By making use of the cool water in the deeper parts of lakes or ponds, buildings can be cooled sustainably. This natural air conditioning also helps to reduce CO2 emissions.

Nuon owns and operates industrial parks in the Netherlands and Germany. Electricity is produced on these industrial parks for supply to local businesses. The independent companies jointly make use of the infrastructure and facilities of the industrial park. This leads to synergy, innovation and attractive partnerships.

Finally, PH&S is responsible for gas storage. In the German town of Epe gas is stored in caverns of exhausted salt mines. Through its gas storage facilities Nuon is able to respond flexibly to the fluctuations in supply and demand.

Sales

The activities of Sales include the sale and supply of gas and electricity to consumers and businesses in the Netherlands. It is also responsible for Value-Added Services, such as the sales and installation of high-efficiency boilers, security systems, insulation, energy advice and small energy-saving products. Nuon is the Dutch market leader.

Business Development & Projects

Business Development & Projects is a corporate department concerned with the development and realisation of new investment projects such as power plants, gas storage facilities and projects relating to sustainability (with the exception of wind energy).

These are projects that are of great importance for Nuon in terms of business continuity and the sustainable future plans of the organisation. When these projects have been completed they are transferred to the Power Heat & Services division.

The development, realisation and management of wind farms in the Netherlands was transferred to the business unit Wind under Vattenfall’s Business Group Pan Europe on 1 July 2009.
