Step2Save
Saving energy in rented housing
Energy-saving measures often require an investment, for instance in insulating material or higher-yield appliances. This proves to be a particular problem for tenants of rented housing. Energy costs consume a substantial proportion of the tenantsÕ income. There is no spare cash for energy-saving measures. On that basis, Nuon is starting a trial offering energy-saving advice for tenants in Amsterdam.
Free advice for lower energy bills
Nuon's Step2Work programme trains young people as energy consultants. The trial will start in September, shortly before the peak use season begins. A number of methods will be used to contact tenants, after which they will receive advice at home. The consultants give energy-saving tips and the tenants receive an Energy Box.
This box contains energy-saving products such as CFLs and 'standby killers', designed to achieve average annual savings of Eur 70 per household and to reduce CO2 emissions by an average of 200 kg per year.
The trial will run for a year and has three social goals that are consistent with the policy plans of Amsterdam's municipal authority:
- Energy conservation
- Reduced CO2 emissions
- New labour market opportunities for unemployed young people
