Safety
Nuon is committed to ensuring absolute safety for its own employees and for contract workers. Nuon is working on an integrated safety system and implementing a programme to continually improve the organisation’s safety awareness.

Joint responsibility
A safe working environment is the joint responsibility of employer and employee, says the Dutch Working Conditions Act. In practice this means that the employer must take measures to ensure a safe working environment, such as providing protective clothing and certified equipment as well as implementing processes and procedures to minimise workplace risks. Employees are expected to comply with the safety procedures and use the clothing and equipment provided in the correct manner. So this involves a combination of measures and behaviour.
An open culture in which employees are stimulated to report unsafe situations and incidents is the first step towards preventing accidents. This includes recording and analysing incidents so that lessons are learned from the situation. The next thing you have to do as a company is prevent or limit the adverse consequences of a risk or emergency. Central coordination of the safety policy and making knowledge widely accessible and available within the organization must help to achieve this.
Safety Policy
Nuon aims to set the safety standard that other companies strive to match. Our policy on accidents and incidents focuses on three pillars: preventative measures, learning from accidents and incidents, and preventing and limiting adverse consequences of accidents and incidents.
Preventive measures
Nuon’s first step is to do everything possible to prevent accidents and incidents by taking preventive measures. These include regular safety and workplace inspections and investments in the purchase of user-friendly and safe equipment and tools.
Structural safety risks in projects are also defined and measures are taken to avoid (potential) risks.
Learning from accidents and incidents
The second pillar of our policy is to learn from accidents and incidents. The aim here is to identify the causes of accidents and incidents and to remove them wherever possible. To this end, reported incidents are analysed every six months and the associated findings are used to draw up or tighten an annual plan containing specific actions.
Preventing and limiting adverse consequences
The third pillar involves preventing and limiting the adverse consequences of accidents and calamities. An example of this is the emergency plans that are in place at all our locations.
