Chain responsibility
Our responsibility as an energy producer and supplier does not end at the front door. As a purchaser of goods and services for our business processes and as a supplier of products to customers, we have both a direct and indirect social, environmental and economic impact on our surroundings.

With coal procurement, for example, you need to look at the entire value chain: where does the coal come from? Is it extracted using environmentally friendly technologies and under good working conditions? Nuon therefore selects with great care the suppliers of the coal that is used in our power plants.
The various parties in the chain of mining, delivery and consumption of coal each have their own responsibility. As the party at the end of the chain it is not easy to take and maintain responsibility for the entire chain. However, the urgency and necessity of ensuring that coal is mined responsibly is perceived in this way. Nuon’s stated procurement policy and its in-built control mechanisms and/or codes of conduct now form the basis for this.
In 2010 further implementation of responsibility in the coal chain will once again be an important topic for Nuon. Together with the other energy companies we have started setting up a dialogue with other concerned parties and social organisations to explore and give shape to radical ways of further implementing chain responsibility. of products and services needed for our business operations.
