Start of site preparation for solar island

Sep 22, 2008 | Amsterdam Start of site preparation for solar island at Noorderplassen-West

Zoneiland Almere

The municipality of Almere has started preparing the site of the solar island in the new residential area Noorderplassen-West. The work consists mainly of excavation for the canal around the future island. The work will go on until November. Nuon Warmte will start to construct the oval island and assemble the collector fields at the beginning of next year.

Thanks to the Almere solar island, for the first time in the Netherlands homes are to be heated collectively with locally-generated solar energy. With a collector area of around 7000 m2 the solar island will be the fourth largest collector field in the world and the first in the Netherlands.

The solar island will supply 9,750 Gigajoules a year of renewable energy. This is 10% of the district’s annual energy needs and equates to the energy used by taking a million showers. Together with the equally environmentally friendly district heating local network, the solar island will ensure that CO2 emissions are reduced by 50% in Noorderplassen-West.
