Sep 09, 2009 | Almere Minister Cramer lays foundation stone for Almere Sun Island

Minister of the Environment Jacqueline Cramer today laid the foundation stone for the installation of the solar island in the new sustainable Noorderplassen-West residential district in Almere. By visiting the location on 'Sustainability Day' the minister showed her support for this genuine sustainable project.
Nuon is building the solar island in conjunction with the district heating network that it is laying in the district. The island will contain more than 7,000 square metres of solar collectors. The hot water supplied by these collectors will be fed into the district heating network, thereby providing heating and hot water to 2,700 homes in the district. Sun Island and the district heating network will together engender a CO2 reduction of 50 per cent.

The island is being realised with contributions from the European Unions, the Municipality of Almere and Nuon, as well as from the residents themselves. As from 2010 Sun Island will generate almost 10,000 Gigajoules of renewable energy, enough to take a million showers a year. It will be the fourth largest solar collector field in the world.
