Apr 06, 2010 | Almere Installation of 520 solar collectors on Sun Island Almere

In Almere is Nuon has started installing 520 solar collectors on Sun Island Almere. The energy generated by the collectors will be used to heat water. The hot water will go to 2,700 homes in the adjacent new housing area Noorderplassen-West and will provide heating and hot tap water. This is the first Dutch housing development to be heated in such a way. The surface area of the solar island is 7,000 m2, equivalent to one and a half football pitches.
The solar island is a project that Nuon is carrying out in partnership with the municipality of Almere to heat the homes in the most sustainable manner possible. The solar island supplies 10% of the heat requirements, with the other 90 % coming from the use of environmentally friendly residual heat from the combined heat and power plant in Almere. The intention is to commission the solar island next summer.
