Nuon studies energy awareness

Feb 20, 2008 | Amsterdam Nuon studies energy awareness in nine regions

A Nuon survey on energy and environmental awareness in nine regions in the Netherlands shows that the residents of the Amsterdam region attach the greatest importance to the environment and environmental problems. Eight out of ten Amsterdam citizens regard these as important, compared to seven out of ten Dutch people nationwide. Nuon commissioned this survey to gain a better understanding of the differences in people’s energy and environmental awareness in the nine towns and cities where a Nuon Energiewinkel has been opened. The Energiewinkel Amsterdam, at Spaklerweg 20, was opened on 24 September 2007. Customers can go there with all their questions on energy and heat issues.

The survey investigated not only the energy and environmental awareness of the region’s people, but also their behaviour. In practice, citizens of Amsterdam score below the average in the latter respect. They leave their televisions on stand-by more often, and they close their doors less often to save energy (heating). A striking finding is the low number of people who take account of day-time and night-time electricity prices. Then again, the people of Amsterdam leave their cars at home more often than elsewhere, but that may be more to do with the city’s parking problems.

Amsterdam keeps it cool

In an average Amsterdam home, four out of ten lightbulbs are low-energy bulbs. Only Enschede scores higher in this respect, namely 42%. In terms of home temperatures, the average Amsterdam resident also thinks of the environment. With an average temperature of 18.7°C during the day and 13.9°C at night, Amsterdam homes are the coolest of the nine surveyed regions (average 19.3°C during the day and 14.9° at night).

Nuon Energiewinkel

The survey was commissioned to gain a better understanding of the differences in energy and environmental awareness in and around the nine Nuon Energiewinkel shops. The Energiewinkel Amsterdam was opened on 24 September 2007.

The Nuon Energiewinkel sells everything to do with heating, energy and energy saving, such as low-energy lightbulbs, design radiators, thermostats, high-efficiency boilers and insulation materials. All this coupled with personal advice for the home, up to installation, service and maintenance. The Energiewinkel also sells the latest gadgets in the area of energy and energy saving, such as stand-by killers, dimmable low-energy lightbulbs and products run on solar energy. The Energiewinkel is open to everyone, including people who are not (or not yet) Nuon customers.

Survey details

The survey was conducted among nearly 2,000 respondents in nine regions in the Netherlands (Amsterdam, Baarn, Alkmaar, Nijmegen, Enschede, Zwolle, Groningen, Beek and Leiderdorp) by the market research agency Blauw Research between 28 November and 9 December 2007.
