May 16, 2008 | Amsterdam Nuon to use sustainable cooling in Atlas ArenA Amsterdam
Nuon intends to cool the buildings in the Atlas ArenA Amsterdam complex sustainably with water from the Ouderkerkerplas lake. Yesterday afternoon Atlas Arena Amsterdam C.V. and Nuon signed the supply contract for the sustainable cooling for five existing buildings and buildings under construction. These buildings will therefore no longer be dependent on cooling devices that consume a lot of electricity. Nuon’s cooling supply will result in a CO2 reduction of 75% in comparison with the current cooling devices.
Water in lakes that cools down naturally in winter to 5 or 6 degrees C. can be used for cooling throughout the year. Presently Nuon is developing a cooling system in Amsterdam-Zuidoost. For that system the company aims to use cold water from the Ouderkerkerplas lake. The contract ensures that eventually a reduction on CO2 emissions of around 900 tons a year will be achieved.

Atlas ArenA Amsterdam is the redevelopment of the existing Atlas office centre in Amsterdam Zuidoost; the redevelopment is geared mainly to renovating the current office space and creating homes, hotels and other facilities. After the redevelopment Atlas ArenA Amsterdam will offer 150,000 m2 floor space.

The sustainable cooling supply using water from the Ouderkerkerplas is due to start in mid-2009. Since August 2006 Nuon has been cooling office buildings in the Amsterdam Zuidas using water from the Nieuwe Meer lake.
