Jun 30, 2008 | Amsterdam Ymere and Nuon test energy-saving high-efficiency boilers
Nuon today installed the first of twenty new-generation high-efficiency boilers in an Amsterdam apartment owned by the Ymere housing association. This new-generation boiler produces both heat and electricity and yields substantial energy savings. This boiler is part of an extensive test designed to optimise the performance of these new-generation boilers. Ymere and Nuon expect the new boiler to help increase energy awareness and comfortable living.
The test will last for at least a year. Throughout this period, we will be closely monitoring the heat and electricity generated by the boiler. Although the high-efficiency boiler uses slightly more gas (on average: around € 180 a year more) than other boilers, it generates around € 500 of electricity a year. This means it represents an important step in the process of decentralising the production of energy.
The field test is the final step in the development of the high-efficiency boiler, which will be launched in late 2009 as the successor to the high-efficiency boilers currently used. It is forecast that, by 2010, around ten thousand Dutch households will use the new-generation high-efficiency boiler to generate heat and electricity.
Working together
Nuon and Ymere are working closely together on developing sustainable energy-related concepts and products for housing association tenants. As well as the high-efficiency boiler trial, these efforts also include the Step2Save project, where long-term unemployed young people give advice on saving energy and so gain valuable work experience. Nuon and Ymere are seeking in this way to play a part in helping the Dutch government to achieve its aim by 2020 of reducing CO2 emissions by 30%, having 20% of the country’s energy requirements generated from sustainable sources and reducing overall energy consumption by 20% compared with the 1990 levels. The government has called on market parties to help achieve these objectives, and Nuon and Ymere are playing an active part in this process.
