May 13, 2009 | Arnhem Nuon opens auxiliary heating plant at Schuytgraaf

Nuon opened its Schuytgraaf auxiliary heating plant in Arnhem today. The new residential area Schuytgraaf will continue to receive its heating from the Kleefse Waard combined heat and power plant in Arnhem. The auxiliary heating plant is a back-up facility which Nuon will only deploy during heating power failures, maintenance or peaks in demand, thus ensuring that the 6,250 future households of the residential area in Arnhem can always rely on heating. The plant stands out for its exceptional architecture.
Environment Alderman Cees Jansen of the Municipality of Arnhem, Heinrich van Doorn, Plan Development Manager of GEM Schuytgraaf and Jan Homan, Managing Director of Nuon Power, Heat & Services opened the Schuytgraaf auxiliary heating plant this afternoon. On Saturday 16 May the doors will be open between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. to give local residents a chance to look around the auxiliary heating plant at Marasingel 151 in Arnhem.
Sustainable design
Schuytgraaf in Arnhem-South is a green and nature-rich residential area. The architecture of the auxiliary heating plant features a sustainable design with natural stone frontage and partly planted roof, thus blending in perfectly with the built-up and natural surroundings. The chimneys in the 21-metre high building are also concealed from sight. 'Vereniging Stadsschoon Arnhem', an association which promotes good urban design, has nominated the auxiliary heating plant for 'The best contribution to urban beauty' award. The association will announce the winner of the award on 19 May.

Biodiesel
As a back-up of the Kleefse Waard combined heat and power plant, the auxiliary heating plant has its own fuel supply. The plant runs on biodiesel, which is wholly in line with the environmental goals of Nuon and the Municipality of Arnhem.
Green district heating
District heating is an environmentally-friendly way of heating homes. It comes from residual heat released during electricity production or waste combustion. This means that no gas is required for heating the homes, which reduces CO2 emissions. In the future Schuytgraaf will save 9.5 million kilos of CO2 emissions per year. At present about 2,000 homes in Schuytgraaf use district heating. The residential area is to be expanded in the coming years and Nuon will also connect the new houses to the district heating network.
