Nuon today signed an agreement with Electrabel – the GDF SUEZ group – to take over its natural gas-fired CHP plant in Almere. The CHP plant comprises two small units of 60 megawatts each. Electrabel’s CHP plant is currently already supplying heat to Nuon for district heating for 43,000 homes in Almere.

"District heating is an environmentally friendly method of heating without a central heating boiler and saves a significant difference of CO2 emissions," says Øystein Løseth, CEO of Nuon. "By purchasing this CHP plant Nuon aims to guarantee the security of supply of heat to the residents."

Maus van Loon, CEO of Electrabel, continues, "In our view it’s a good idea for the entire heat supply process, from production to actual delivery, to be in the hands of a single party. That’s the best way of optimising the process. And of course it’s also in the best interests of the customer in terms of quality." The transaction still needs to be approved by the Nma.

Personnel

There are 30 people working at the plant. These people will become employees of Nuon. "We are happy to be able to welcome new colleagues. This gives an extra guarantee of quality and continuity," adds Løseth. The SER and trade unions involved in the two companies have been fully informed of the transaction.
