New Nuon gas-fired power plant in Diemen, with heat pipeline under IJmeer lake to Almere
Aug 30, 2010 | Amsterdam Efficient combined heat and power plant to achieve output of 85%

Nuon, part of the Vattenfall Group, has decided to invest in a new gas-fired power plant to be built at the company’s existing site in Diemen. The company will also lay a heat transportation pipeline from Diemen to Almere so that the residual heat can be used to heat homes. Combining the highest feasible output of the gas-fired plant with large-scale supplying of heat to Amsterdam and Almere will enable overall output of 85% to be achieved.
The new plant will more than double Nuon’s electricity and heat-generating capacity in Diemen and, via the pipeline, help meet the growing demand for heat in Almere.
Higher output in Diemen
The new combined heat and power plant will be built alongside the existing plant in Diemen. It is to be built by Siemens using state-of-the-art technology and is designed to achieve the highest possible output (approximately 59%). With electricity capacity of 435 megawatts and heat capacity of 260 megawatts, the new plant will be able to supply some 750,000 households with electricity.
Heat for Amsterdam and Almere
Heat produced in Diemen will be used to heat some 25,000 homes in Amsterdam and Almere. The new plant will be in the exceptional position of combining heat and power production in a way that minimises the environmental impact. Homes will no longer require separate central heating or boilers, and this will reduce the CO2 emissions on heat supplied by 50%.
The plant is expected to become operational in late 2012. Until then, growth in demand for heat will be absorbed by the existing power plants in Almere and Diemen, with the modifications needed for this being carried out over the coming period.
Heat transportation pipeline from Diemen to Almere under IJmeer lake
Heat produced in Diemen will be transported via a pipeline to Almere Poort and Almere Stad, where demand for district heating is increasing as a result of major new residential building projects. The pipeline will be 1.5 metres below the IJmeer lake and is scheduled for completion in early 2012.
