Society
Nuon supports a selection of organisations and initiatives that contribute to social development.
Johan Cruyff Foundation
This foundation supports sports projects for disabled and non-disabled children in the Netherlands and beyond. The partnership with Nuon focuses mainly on football activities for neighbourhood kids and kickabout courts in the Netherlands through financial support and voluntary work.
Reading & Writing Foundation
This foundation is dedicated to promoting literacy in the Netherlands. Nuon screened its customer service letters to ensure people with low literacy can understand them.
Sustainable Tuesday
This project has now been sponsored twice by Nuon, namely in 2006 and 2007. Nuon will continue to support this project in 2008. Sustainable Tuesday is an initiative of a large number of social organisations, such as IVN, the National Youth Council and the Women’s Council, and is aimed at collecting ideas from citizens and businesses for sustainable activities or business plans. The event was held for the 9th time last year as a kind of alternative Budget Day on the first Tuesday of September. A briefcase full of great sustainability ideas was presented to Environment Minister Cramer.
The Weather in the Classroom
In 2006 the Management Board of Nuon decided to support the interactive educational project named The Weather in the Classroom. Nuon sees the project as an opportunity to make young people more aware of the relationship between weather and renewable energy and the impact of their own energy consumption. Together withMeteo Consult, the educational organisation APS and the radio astronomy project Lofar, a pilot project was set up in 2007 aimed at children aged 9 to 12. We expect 100 schools to participate in the school year 2008/2009.
