Community Involvement
Nuon’s community involvement is mainly reflected in its sponsorship and support of social initiatives. Nuon primarily sponsors organisations and initiatives with a national reach, preferably by providing a combination of knowledge and resources.
In 2007 about 15 organisations and initiatives were sponsored. Most of these had a social or sustainable focus such as the nature conservation association Natuurmonumenten, the Nuon Solar Team, Introdans and the Johan Cruyff Foundation. We are involved with society by sponsoring institutions and initiatives in our home cities, notably Amsterdam where we support the Amsterdam Historical Museum, Sustainable Amsterdam Week and the Concertgebouw. Nuon’s sponsoring policy is not solely aimed at sustainability. One trend in the past year was that our commercial sponsoring became more community-oriented while our community-oriented sponsoring (e.g. Natuurmonumenten) became increasingly business-based.
We always explore opportunities for involving employees in the sponsored organisation, for instance in the form of voluntary work. One example of this concerns the school street football championships organised by the Johan Cruyff Foundation in Amsterdam, where colleagues helped out as stewards on the day of the finals. Our sponsorship choices also take account of our customers’ expectations regarding our sponsoring activities. Their priorities are: environmental protection, education, poverty reduction and innovation.
The Nuon Foundation was set up to support employees in their own voluntary work. The Nuon Foundation is exclusively ‘open’ to employees and is therefore discussed in the chapter on ‘Employees’.
